Sept 18 (Reuters) - NextEra Energy-owned NEE.N Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) said on Wednesday that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the license renewal for two of its Turkey Point nuclear plant units for another 20 years.
FPL said licenses for Units 3 and 4, both located south of Miami, have been extended through 2052 and 2053, respectively.
U.S. power consumption is expected to rise significantly by the end of the decade as a boom in artificial intelligence drives up electricity demand from data centers, creating a need for utilities to keep pace.
Vistra VST.N in July received a 20-year license extension from the NRC for its Comanche Peak nuclear plant in Texas, while Dominion Energy D.N announced the 20-year license extension for its North Anna nuclear power plant in August.
FPL said nuclear power accounts for 20% of its fuel mix and is the second-largest energy source in Florida.
The company's St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant and the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant, owned by FPL's sister affiliate NextEra Energy Resources, are also undergoing license renewal application processes, FPL said.
