Wall Street's main stock indexes struggled for direction on Tuesday, as traders held on to bets of rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the coming months, even as consumer prices data came in hotter than expected. .N

At 11:31 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI was up 0.55% at 38,982.7. The S&P 500 .SPX was up 0.96% at 5,167.03 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC was up 1.38% at 16,240.342.
